Chino Basin Water Conservation District announces free Winter Open House

The Chino Basin Water Conservation District (CBCWD), located in Montclair, has announced a free upcoming Winter Open House to be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. This year marks the first time the district has held an evening open house.

“We wanted to bring in new audiences to see what we’re doing with (water) conservation,” said Becky Rittenburgh, community programs manager at CBWCD. “It also aligns with the Ontario-Montclair School District’s (OMSD) schedules and works for afterschool schedules.”

The Winter Open House promises to be an evening of art, demos, tours, crafts and fun for families. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the finalist entries and vote for the winners of the Visual Art Poster Contest for kindergarten through 5th grade entries as well as the Infographic Poster Contest for grades 6th through 12th grade finalists. Finalists for both contests were selected by the district’s Water Education Committee.

The open house will offer several unique activities. Attendees can learn about seed saving to allow a continual cycle of growing your own fruits and vegetables. Demonstration bee hives will be available for viewing as well as an opportunity to learn about vermicomposting. Vermicompost is the product of the composting process using various species of worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and other earthworms, to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials.

Also available during the open house will student presentations for conservation solutions for their individual schools. Tours of the water conservation district will be available including the chance to visit with the district’s 100 pond tortoise, Sam. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about other water conservation methods and the district’s free programs and services. Youngsters will have a chance to make recycled art projects.

The Winter Open House will be held at the district’s offices and gardens at 4594 San Bernardino St. in Montclair.
